Location: Adelaide, South Australia
Client: Sage Automation
Service: Communications, Control and Electrical Cabling Infrastructure
Sector: Transport Infrastructure, Intelligent Transport Systems

Project Overview

Apex Communication Technologies was engaged by Sage Automation to deliver the communications, control and electrical cabling infrastructure package for the O-Bahn City Access Project, one of Adelaide’s significant Intelligent Transport Systems upgrades.

The project involved the installation, termination, testing and commissioning of extensive fibre optic, communications, control and electrical cabling systems supporting the operation of the upgraded O-Bahn tunnel and associated traffic management infrastructure.

Apex delivered works across the southern approach, central tunnel and northern approach sections of the project, supporting reliable connectivity for Adelaide’s transport network and future-ready Intelligent Transport Systems infrastructure.

Scope of Works

Apex delivered a complete turnkey communications infrastructure package, including:

  • Installation of single mode optical fibre backbone networks
  • Installation of communications and control cabling systems
  • Installation of electrical power cabling for field devices
  • Fibre optic splicing, patching and termination
  • Ethernet patching within communications equipment rooms
  • Installation of tunnel communications infrastructure
  • Labelling, testing and commissioning of installed systems
  • Construction verification testing and certification
  • As-built documentation and project handover packages

Key Challenges

Tunnel and Restricted Access Environments

The project required works within tunnel environments and restricted access areas, requiring careful planning, specialised access equipment and strict safety controls.

High-Capacity Fibre Network Delivery

Apex installed and commissioned a 144-core fibre optic backbone network, along with multiple 24-core and 12-core fibre optic distribution links across the project corridor.

Multi-Discipline Coordination

Apex coordinated installation activities alongside civil, structural, electrical and transport systems contractors while maintaining programme milestones.

Testing and Certification Requirements

Comprehensive OTDR and dual-wavelength testing was required across all fibre infrastructure to verify network performance and support final handover.

Apex Solution

Apex deployed specialised fibre optic technicians, cable hauling teams, supervisors and commissioning personnel to safely deliver the communications infrastructure package.

The team completed:

  • Large-scale optical fibre installations
  • Fusion splicing and fibre termination works
  • Communications and control cable installations
  • Ethernet and fibre patching within communications equipment rooms
  • End-to-end testing and certification
  • Comprehensive quality assurance and documentation

Through strong project management and technical expertise, Apex ensured all communications infrastructure was delivered to specification and integrated effectively into the broader transport system.

Project Outcomes

  • Successful delivery of critical communications and control infrastructure
  • Installation and commissioning of high-capacity fibre optic networks
  • Reliable connectivity supporting Adelaide’s Intelligent Transport Systems
  • Comprehensive testing, certification and verification completed
  • Safe delivery within a complex transport infrastructure environment
  • Strong collaboration with Sage Automation and project stakeholders
